A Mid-Century Modern Revival with Personal Touches and Playful Patterns

A Mid-Century Modern Revival Design - In Bend, Oregon

Known affectionately around here as the “quake house” is a modern take on mid-century design, rooted in warmth, whimsy, and real-life collaboration. From globe lights to walnut cabinetry, this project honors the architectural charm of its style while weaving in thoughtful updates and bold tile moments throughout.

A Kitchen with Character

From the beginning, the home’s kitchen was envisioned as equal parts timeless and expressive. Walnut cabinets ground the space, while Sonoma Tile’s backsplash in soft, sea-glass greens adds a subtle wash of color. We paired these finishes with silver Delta fixtures for a clean, classic touch that offsets the deeper wood tones.

Instead of chasing trends, we focused on enduring choices: globe pendant lights from Schoolhouse give the room a gentle retro rhythm, and black-framed windows add definition, allowing both wood and tile to stand out.

Playful Tile, Serious Style

Across the home, we brought in tile selections from Bedrosians to introduce movement and surprise. The powder room’s starburst tile – a true standout – sets a playful tone for guests, while the laundry room’s Savoy Hive tile adds geometric interest to a utilitarian space.

The flooring throughout is a thoughtful mix: wide plank rift sawn White Oak for softness and warmth underfoot, paired with 24”x48” Nomad charcoal tiles where durability and drama were called for. The larger format adds scale, and the white veining offers just enough contrast.

In the primary bath, we introduced a white mosaic tile with pale blue accents, echoing the tones used in other parts of the house. A freestanding tub, round mirrors, and satin nickel fixtures complete the picture – balanced, elegant, and deeply livable.

A Collaborative Process

The homeowner, a high school teacher, was hands-on from day one, often reviewing samples and ideas in evening meetings after class. In fact, they began pulling materials before the foundation was even poured. That level of enthusiasm and early planning helped shape the project’s success.

Of course, no design journey is without its speed bumps. With two strong (and stylistically different) opinions at play, the process at times felt like “marriage counseling” – a phrase we all laughed about more than once. But with open communication and a lot of trust, we found our common ground.

A Home That Reflects Its People

In the end, this home became more than just a design project. It became a reflection of its people, thoughtful, a little playful, and filled with personality. From the moment you walk through the door, it feels like someone lives here. Someone with good taste and a good sense of humor.
